A few words about the inspiration behind the new album.
I am particularly thrilled to have the chance to play and record the all-but-forgotten Introduction and Fugue for two pianos with Rebeca. I only learned of this piece from my much loved teacher Phyllis Sellick shortly before her death some years ago. Phyllis and her husband, Cyril Smith were a legendary piano duo, much admired by Vaughan Williams….he dedicated this marvellous work to them and she in turn passed to me her original score, complete with VW’s suggested metronome markings and dynamic shadings…..in a way Rebeca and I are completely indebted to Phyllis for this recording – she was a lovely, lovely lady and a remarkable pianist and teacher.
